Start of the Baltic Grid Project on the 1st November, 2005

The Baltic Grid Project (contract number 026715) starts on the 1st November, 2005. It will last for 30 months.
The project involves 10 leading institutions in
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and CERN. The Polish and
Swedish partners have significant roles in EGEE and other Grid
projects; CERN, the lead EGEE partner and a partner in many other Grid
projects will ensure good support from several other Grid projects.
The Baltic Grid project will facilitate the formation of effective research collaborations with scientists anywhere, especially within reach of European Grids. The project will train and educate providers, administrators and users of Grids in the Baltic States to a level of state-of-the-art expertise in Grids.
Just after the project launch three events covering the dissemination and training activity will be held, namely: Cracow Grid Workshop, gLite tutorial and BG Kick-off meeting. Read more in the Training and Events sections.
The application, thanks to its generic framework, can be employed
in any other problems that require the use of the 'Toy Monte Carlo'
technique and the GRID computations.

The official report from the reviewers is very positive and the overall conclusion is that the project has made excellent progress during the first year and got a green light to continue.
A growing production Grid infrastructure spanning the three Baltic States is in place. The work will now focus on introduction of new users and grid enabling of more applications within scientific and technical computing.
For Latvia it means a historic upgrade of the GEANT connection from 155Mbps to 1Gbps and the Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia covering the GEANT cost. It means benefits not only for Grid users, but for all academic community in Latvia.

Today the first two BalticGrid sites was certified on EGEE.
Two sites, EENET and VU-MIF-LCG2 in Tartu, Estonia and Vilnius, Lithuania, respectively, was today certified on the world largest production Grid EGEE. The sites will now be monitored in the EGEE global grid status web together with other EGEE sites.
EENET is a smaller cluster but operates the BalticGrid core grid services. VU-MIF-LCG2 is a 32 cpu cluster that will mainly support applications within materials science and high-energy physics.

The development version of the StatHEP application has been successfully run in the BalticGrid.
Following thorough tests of the application framework and
GRID functionality, first physics results have been obtained.The application, thanks to its generic framework, can be employed

BG clusters already in EGEE infrastructure - they are now tracked by the Real Time Monitor.
BalticGrid sites are now tracked by a 3D upgrade
of a popular grid monitor developed by the UK's GridPP project, the
Real Time Monitor. It tracks sites participating in several grid
computing projects, including EGEE and the LHC Computing Grid.

The new 3D system gathers information from
resource brokers around the world, and uses images from NASA's Blue
Marble Project to present a visualization of grids at work. The grid
monitor enables users to watch lists of resource brokers, computing
elements and jobs, which are also fully sortable. For more information

Latvia: Natural Language Processing supported by Grid

SemtiKamols - Natural Language Processing
Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology lately is emerging as one
of the new application areas for the Grid computing. The computational
challenges in this area are related to the deep semantic analysis of
natural language texts, which are highly ambiguous by their very
nature. The relevant semantic Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
technology (the same one used also in Semantic Web and Description
Logic languages like OWL-DL) is lately reaching the maturity level,
where deep semantic analysis of large text corpuses is becoming
theoretically possible.
Unfortunately, the computational complexity of the involved techniques is known to be worst-case NP-complete, meaning that their solution requires large computational resources.
IMCS at Univerity of Latvia is conducting research in this area in the framework of the National Research Programme project "SemtiKamols". For computationally intensive tasks the project started with developing a local xgrid environment, but lately some of the tasks are being ported also to the BalticGrid (EGEE gLite) environment.

the signing 8 March 2007, BalticGrid has signed Service Level
Agreements (SLA) with all three Baltic National Research Networks
Providors; LITNET, LATNET and EENet. The SLAs defines demarcation
points between grid resources and the NRENs as well as capacities

Hands Meeting (AHM3) was held at the Estonian Academy of Science and
National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics (NICPB), Tallinn,

Hands Meeting (AHM4) was held at the Royal Institute of Technology
(KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, from December 12 to December 14, 2007.
The meeting was the last one from the series of the All Hands Meetings
(AHM) of the BalticGrid (BG) project. The AHM meetings have been
organized several times during the Project life to present the status
of the project and its all activities for the whole Consortium as well
